Happy New Year from Strangeloop!
Tuesday, December 2, 2014
From our artistic directors: We are in Development
Hello everyone and Happy Giving Tuesday!
This Giving Tuesday, I am asking you to consider committing to a monthly donation to Strangeloop Theatre.
Strangeloop is growing in so many ways, but for me, the most interesting growth has been in development. This year Strangeloop has made a real effort to create an internal development series. This is a place for company members to workshop their ideas into more polished scripts that can then contribute to our season selection discussions. We have long been interested in new and adapted work, but to have some many ideas coming straight from our artists has been incredible.
We have held public readings of two of these works. The reading of the full script Thinking Caps, by company member Keith Gatchel, was presentedon September 2 as a part of the Greenhouse Trellis Reading Series. Select scenes from a movement-based stage adaptation of The Odyssey, being adapted by Carrie Campana and Maria Burnham, were performed on November 24 at Black Rock Pub. At both events, we received invaluable feedback from our audiences. There are more exciting ideas in the pipeline, and we can't wait to continue our progress.
In fact, our Spring of 2015 mainstage show will be a full production ofThinking Caps, a play which supposes the advantages and consequences of telepathic social media. The biggest challenge facing new ideas is they need support. New plays are harder to market and therefore riskier for companies to produce.
We think the risk is worth it, we hope you do too.
Commit* to supporting new works by setting up a monthly donation through on our website – strangelooptheatre.org. Simply click on the donation button and you'll be able to set up the amount you wish. If you donate today — or any Giving Tuesday during the holiday season — through our website, PayPal will provide a 1 percent match on every donation received. These types of donations will help create a financial base of support for all our operations, including supporting these new plays. Strangeloop is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit. Your contribution will be tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for supporting Strangeloop Theatre.
Letitia Guillaud
Co-Artistic Director
*There are many other ways to give. If you cannot commit to monthly donations, one-time donations in check form can be made out to "Strangeloop Theatre, NFP" and sent to 2616 N. Spaulding Ave. #2, Chicago, IL 60647. If you cannot give at this time, you can still support by helping to spread the word.
If you are interested in volunteering and feel you have skills that would be helpful to us, or are interested in serving on our board, please e-mail us at loop@strangelooptheatre.org. Thank you.

Fight Night: Fightsgiving!
Tuesday, November 4, 2014
The gloves — and sometimes the shirts — come off this season for Fight Night: Fightsgiving
Fight Night is a one-night, late-night violent cabaret celebrating the art of stage combat through original storytelling and violence design.
Fight Night: Fightsgiving is autumnal themed — celebrating everything that makes this season wonderful — and it takes place at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, at The Den Theater, 1333 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60622.
In addition to Strangeloop, participating companies include: Red Theater, To The Point, Nothing Special Productions, Live Action Theater, The Reutan Collective, Nothing Without A Company and Walkabout Theater Company.
Strangeloop's contender is a story that details the epic battle between Fall and Autumn to determine once and for all what the season will be called, told in the only way such a mythic story can be told — as a Greek tragedy.
Written and directed by Strangeloop Company Member Maria Burnham, Fall Our Tragic stars Strangeloop Associate Member Miona Lee as Autumn and Jean E. Burr (Cassie Hack in Hack/Slash) as Fall. Chad Wise, Grace DeSant and Vickie Eisenstein also star. Justin Martin Fill is the fight choreographer and Strangeloop Company Member Holly Robison is the assistant director.
Tickets are on sale now. You are highly encouraged to buy tickets in advance as this event always sells out to a standing room only crowd.

Halloween comes early this year
Based on Tim Seeley's comic-book series of the same name, Strangeloop Theatre and Chemically Imbalanced Comedy's punchy, bloody horror show takes us on the road with a formidable vigilante duo...with some extraordinary puppetry portraying a psychopathic teddy bear, unusual characters like a disgraced Miss America turned CEO, and a few well-paced slapstick ass kickings from Cassie and Vlad.
Much like the comic, the show incorporated a lot of humor throughout. The elevator scene was hilarious. The fight scenes were fun, and I avoided the front two rows to miss becoming blood splattered...I’m no theater critic, but I know I enjoyed myself, and I think any HACK/SLASH fan would get a kick out of seeing the show. I also think that it would be a good introduction to HACK/SLASH to anyone that is unfamiliar with the book.

His recent credits include the films Igniting Justice as Xander and Kleptosomnia as John, with previous theater experience including productions of Once Upon a Mattress, Big Mary, The Stage Door and Grease. RJ has trained at The Second City in Chicago for improv and regularly does martial arts, more specifically Krav Maga through Krav Academy. He has also performed singing with an American Choir touring through China for the 2008 Olympic Ceremonies, and is currently working on YouTube based web series that will be premiering later this year. He wishes to thank Tim Seeley for creating such a bad ass comic that gave us such a great story, and director Brad Gunter for making all of this happen, bringing Hack/Slash to the stage while keeping it true to the original story.

Strangeloop, CIC bring you horror with a dose of humor thisHalloween season
This fall Strangeloop Theatre, in a co-production with CIC Theater, is bringing the horror comedy series Hack/Slash by Chicago artist and writer Tim Seeley from the 2D comic book page to a 3D Chicago stage.
"This production will appeal to hardcore fans of the comic book series, while still being accessible to theatre-goers coming in with little to no knowledge of Hack/Slash or Tim Seeley," said Brad Gunter, Hack/Slash director and co-artistic director of Strangeloop Theatre. "It promises to be a bloody good time — pun totally intended — for everyone who joins us."
Hack/Slash is the story of horror victim survivor Cassie Hack who, together with her disfigured sidekick Vlad, travels the country (and sometimes the underworld) fighting evil slashers who refuse to just lay down and die even after being burned, impaled and shot 20 times.

This is the second time Hack/Slash has sliced its way onto the Chicago stage. The first production, which featured a different script, was produced by New Millennium Theatre Company in 2005. Both productions were done in conjunction with creator Tim Seeley.
"It's great to see Hack/Slash brought to life again," Seeley said. "I'm excited for the fans to see it and to have it introduced to a new audience."
For the Strangeloop/CIC version, Seeley's original comic book scripts were used as a basis for dialogue and action. This production pulls from several storylines giving fans and newcomers alike a glimpse into Cassie's history, the mayhem that made her what she is and, of course, plenty of slashers.

An office worker in Manhattan, or possibly New Siberia, sees something she never thought she'd see at the water cooler and then gets cornered by a nosy coworker once back at her desk, who is filled with questions about her water drinking habits, what happened at the water cooler and — most ominously — what her previous job experience was.
